Very High Frequencies

VHF 294 (Monster Magnet) features cuts from an impressive amount of the long running New Jersey band. We are blasting tracks from nine different MM releases including the two remix albums, Milking The Stars: A Re-Imagining Of Last Patrol (2014) and Cobras And Fire (The Mastermind Redux) (2015). These albums feature a psychedelic guitar heavy mix for a space rock vibe that would impress Hawkwind fans as well as metal heads alike. 
Monster Magnet is known for interpreting other artists songs. Not Dead Yet Mike has selected a few of them for tonight’s episode. Prepare for a Robert Calvert cover along with a cover of The Temptation’s classic, Ball Of Confusion, and a  truly magical and epic take on Donovan’s Three Kingfishers. There’s a surprise or two as well so I won’t give the whole show away here. 
Expect Monster Magnet hits like Space Lord, Silver Future, and Look To Your Orb For The Warning as well as some deep cuts from all the most recent MM releases. Let’s face it, mainstream radio isn’t playing songs from Mindfucker (2018) simply because of the title. We are checking it out naturally as well as A Better Dystopia (2021). 
Monster Magnet have been around since 1989 and deserve to get the recognition they earned. Nobody sounds quite like them which isn’t easy to do in such a crowded marketplace. You’re going to want to play VHF-294 (Monster Magnet) very loud and you may find yourself engaging in spontaneous air guitar heroics! You’ve been warned!

VHF-293 (Wino) exams the seasoned singer and guitarist various solo and band collaborations. Scott “Wino” Weinrich has an impressive resume. His doom outfit The Obsessed began his professional career in the early eighties. Now he’s reformed the band which is currently touring North America. He also has released solo albums as Wino. In 2025 he released Create Or Die. Not Dead Yet Mike checks out that album and his 2009 solo album Punctuated Equilibrium. 
Just some of the bands Wino has released music with include Saint Vitus, Place Of Skulls, and one off metal project Shrinebuilder with members of the Melvin’s, Sleep and Neurosis. We will hear from all of them on this episode of Very High Frequencies. 
Combining elements of doom metal, stoner rock, acoustic blues, and even occasionally punk - sometimes in the same song - it’s a roller coaster ride of heavy music. Perhaps surprisingly there’s a fair amount of instrumental songs in Wino’s repertoire. Punk informed tracks such as Gods, Frauds, Neo-cons and Demagogues demonstrate a political philosophy weaving into the music. Perhaps unsurprisingly there’s a few songs about drug addiction that emphasize the negatives. There’s also a bunch of songs about making wise choices in life and learning from past mistakes. Wino is always striving to be a better version of himself. The life struggles he endured no doubt fuel his passion for playing and performing. 
VHF-293 (Wino) is a slice of the Maryland musician’s impressive catalog. Be sure to catch The Obsessed live if you can.

VHF-292 (ZZTop) is jam packed with rocking tunes by the legendary Houston, Texas band. Forming in 1969, the three piece outfit had the same lineup for fifty-one years, until bassist Dusty Hill passed away on July 28, 2021. Billy Gibbons, vocals and guitarist, is the band leader and put the group together. Drummer Frank Beard held down the beat.
ZZ Top released fifteen studio albums. Initially a blues based three piece, the group morphed in the early eighties after performing on an English television program with Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark (OMD). Intrigued by synthesizers and drum machines, Billy introduced elements of New Wave and Pop music into the group’s music. The group also has said that they were influenced by Depeche Mode.
Helping popularize the band was their distinctive visual appearance. The band dressed in colorful suits and wore cowboy hats with sunglasses. Billy and Dusty grew chest length beards. MTV aired their slick videos featuring souped up hot rods and scantily dressed women in heavy rotation. 
After several successful albums in their newfound style the band returned to their roots by the mid-nineties and brought back a more traditional blues rock sound while still enjoying the occasional boom box jam.
Not Dead Yet Mike has selected a track or two from all of their fifteen studio albums. We are giving a bunch of the MTV era hits a rest since we’ve all heard them plenty of times already. That gives us more time to check out some deep cuts and some more recent tracks as well. 
Having sold an estimated 50 million records, ZZ Top might surprise you with the variety and genre exploration. Far from a one trick pony, the band had style to spare as this week’s Very High Frequencies demonstrates. It’s the little old band from Texas on VHF-292 (ZZ Top).

VHF-291 (Clutch) is packed with cool tracks from half a dozen of the Germantown, Maryland hard rocker’s catalog. With thirteen albums released since 1991, the stoner band enjoys a devoted following. 
Currently the group is on the road with Corrosion Of Conformity touring across North America.
Clutch is vocalist and rhythm guitarist Neil Fallon, guitarist Tim Sult, on bass Dan Maines, and on drums, Jean-Paul Gaster. 
Not Dead Yet Mike has selected tracks from Pure Rock Fury (2001) like “Careful With That Mic” and “Open Up The Border” that demonstrate the energy the band  is known for. 
The band’s sixth album, Blast Tyrant, from 2004 is also much appreciated by fans and gets a VHF work out. Songs such as “Cypress Grove” and “The Mob Goes Wild” are still live favorites today.
We also check out the band’s ninth album, Strange Cousins From The West. Tracks such as “Struck Down” and “Motherless Child” are not to be missed.
Very High Frequencies also has selected a bunch of tracks from album number twelve, Book Of Bad Decisions (2018) and the most recent  Clutch album, lucky number thirteen, Sunrise On Slaughter Beach. 
Perhaps unusual for a hard rock outfit, the band has quite a sense of humor that comes across on tracks like “Three Golden Horns” (jazz music is corrupting our youth!) and “Arts and Crafts” that simply must be heard to fully appreciate.

VHF-290 (Queen) examines tracks from thirteen (out of fifteen) studio albums released by the international superstars. 
Not Dead Yet Mike has selected a treasure trove of Queen hits along with a bunch of their more obscure songs as well. The group consistently changed up their sound to various degrees of success. There’s a big difference between the early seventies albums and their later works. Prog rock leanings morphed into keyboard heavy pop with a hard rock middle era. But somehow it is all still Queen. Whether hard rocking or perhaps a multi layered operatic vocal workout, or even a thumping dance beat, there is no mistaking a Queen song, no other band sounds like they did. 
Very High Frequencies has highlighted some of Queen’s most popular songs and also shines a light on some of their lesser known gems, such as the epic track, The Prophet Song. Bohemian Rhapsody gets a run for its money! 
VHF-290 (Queen) will rock you! 

VHF-289 (Danzig) examines the first seven Danzig albums released between 1988 to 2002.
After fronting the Misfits and Samhain Glen Danzig formed a band under his stage name. Initially in league with producer Rick Ruben, the group played a traditional heavy metal style for the first few albums but slowly morphed towards a more industrial metal sound, perhaps influenced by the popularity of bands like Nine Inch Nails. 
Glen Danzig has a dark persona. Usually shirtless, with long flowing black hair, he created an image that fans could appreciate. Channeling Jim Morrison and an evil Elvis vocally, Danzig had roots in traditional rock music but tried to be spooky. Some of the album titles reflect the mindset of their creator.Satanic references are often used and the Bible is also a source for inspiration. 
Very High Frequencies has pulled together some of the best songs that the band released. Not Dead Yet Mike has chosen some of the bigger MTV era hits from albums 1-3 and some interesting songs from the later albums as well. With album titles such as Danzig 777: I Luciferi and Danzig 666:Satan’s Child mainstream alternative music listeners did not line up in droves. Regardlessly there were some decent songs on the later albums and this is your opportunity to check them out!

Very High Frequencies is doing another set of cover songs due to the overwhelming response to last week’s episode! VHF-288 (Cover Songs Pt 2) presents a who’s who of bands and artists getting covered by a bunch of alternative music heavy hitters. VHF-287 (Cover Songs) Very High Frequencies enjoys the variety of types of cover songs that alternative artists have released over the years. Some bands attempt to create note perfect clones of the original tune while other artists try to modify the song to perhaps sound like the covering artists other works. 
This episode pays tribute to a bunch of legends like Pink Floyd, The Who, Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Iggy & the Stooges, John Lennon and the Beatles, and more.

VHF-286 (Roxy Music) has a bit of all eight studio albums the English Art Rock band released between 1972 to 1982. We also blast a couple of live tracks that demonstrate the band’s ability to pull it off in front of an adoring crowd. Not Dead Yet Mike has also put together a mini covers set. The Byrd’s “Eight Miles High”, Neil Young’s “Like A Hurricane” and John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy” all get a Roxy Music interpretation. 
Roxy Music’s final album, 1982’s Avalon, is considered by many fans to be their favorite. We won’t dispute its greatness (expect a few cuts!) but we also focus on its less celebrated predecessor, 1980’s Flesh & Blood. The early Eno era gets some love as well. His keyboard and synthesizer contributions remain unique and are quite appreciated by many Roxy Music listeners. Of course he went on to become a legend in production, and for his solo work, as well as various musical collaborations.

VHF-285 (Bob Weir) celebrates the legacy the singer and rhythm guitarist has been a part of. Not Dead Yet Mike has chosen mostly live Grateful Dead songs that predominantly feature the recently departed legend. As a founding member of the long running band he’s heard on many beloved songs. 
Very High Frequencies has selected songs from two different shows in Rochester, NY, 10/26/71 and 11/05/77. It’s apparent by audience applauding how much more popular they had become by 1977. We also check out songs from shows in London, England, 4/7/72, Veneta, Oregon on 8/27/72, Cornell NY 5/8/77, and Buffalo, NY, 7/4/89.
