English songwriter, guitarist, drum programmer, and singer, JK Broadrick + bass player GC Green formed Godflesh in the late '80's. Inspired by radical bands such as Killing Joke and Throbbing Gristle, their music reflecting  a bleak existence reeking of stagnation and depressing council estates. Life is a struggle therefore the music crushes accordingly.
This week on Very High Frequencies we will check out three of JK's projects, Godflesh, Jesu and JK Flesh. Each has a unique sound while sharing some stylistic DNA throughout.

The Kinks were an English rock band that wasn't the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. They sang songs about misfits for misfits by misfits. The Kinks were the Masters of Modern World freakout. Paranoia will destroy ya. Very High Frequencies spins some of their radio hits and choice deep cuts, along with a few energetic live tracks on this week's The Kinks show.

Skinny Puppy Vol 2:  Slices through the entire catalog of their highly influential self described audio sculptures.Like most innovators, Skinny Puppy does not get the widespread recognition or acclaim of the diverse bands which found inspiration from their un-commercial output and theatrical stage shows. A young Trent Reznor was taken under the bands wings for a very early NIN opening tour slot. Trent has said that his huge early hit song "Down In It" was his attempt to recreate Skinny Puppy's song "Dig It". Songs often utilized sampling from horror movies and twisted dialogue from odd TV programs blaring over a relentless  percussion beat and heavy but melodic synths married with Ogre's distorted vocals that touched on a psychedelic left wing hippie philosophy. Ogre called out the evils of totalitarian governments as well as capitalist greed run amok. Lyrical themes included the horror of animals being used for research via vivisection; the pollution of our planet; drug addiction; health crisis's like AIDS and the proliferation of man made cancer causing chemicals; the ramifications of supporting the industrial military complex and more.Skinny Puppy might not be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but their impact on music today is profound. Contemporary artists such as Grimes vocally attest to the impact of Skinny Puppy's creative and unique musical contributions. Dig It indeed.

VHF-85 (Alice Cooper Group). From 1969 to 1973 the Alice Cooper Group released 7 albums, toured the world, drank a lot of beer and had a string of top forty radio hits. This week I'm playing songs from the early bad trip psychedelic mind meld of the first two Zappa label albums, to top ten hits. Songs about teenage angst, parental control, drinking, death and sex led to international chart success and theatrical sold out tours. The band honed their songwriting craft with their cohort in world domination, producer Bob Ezrin until they all became The Great American Success Story, millionaires with Hollywood mansions and swimming pools full of booze. What could go wrong!!?
